Summary This case study is based on a study conducted on the choice of transport mode by nonresidential university students in Ghana. Nonresidential university students who usually live outside the campus are obliged to find transport to campus for studies. In carrying out the study, we employed the multinomial logit (MNL) regression model for analysis. This method case explains the MNL and the steps involved in its implementation. We used a novel approach by deliberately avoiding algebraic equations that appear scary to some young researchers and graduate students. However, we were minded to maintain the technical rigor and details needed when analyzing categorical outcome variables in general, specifically when using the MNL regression. In that respect, we have explained the overall design of the case study, why we used transport mode as a choice variable, and, therefore, can be analyzed using the MNL. In particular, we have explained the need to test for the irrelevant alternative assumption. We have also used excerpts from the case study to reflect on how to interpret results from the MNL model.
