Summary In this case, we describe the experience of conducting a qualitative study on an understudied topic, partner abuse, in a vulnerable and stigmatized population, sexual minority men living with HIV. The study faced multiple challenges related to the design, human research protection, funding, and coordinating across stakeholders--all made more difficult by the fact that the researcher was a novice in this area.
